Introduction

Pharmacists are key members in the health care team, because of their specialized knowledge in the use and application of medications and also in their communications with patients. In general, there are two major areas in pharmacy namely, Pharmaceutical Science and Pharmacy Practice. The vision of the Department of Pharmacy of Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Ruhuna is to produce graduates who is able to communicate and deliver the elements of pharmaceutical care and medicines management, conduct research in the pharmaceutical field and having relevant skills and knowledge which are based upon and underpinned by appropriate and sufficient understanding of the principle and techniques of the pharmaceutical sciences.

• will have the knowledge, skills and correct attitudes to perform the Pharmacists duties in health institutions in Sri Lanka and abroad.
• will be a fully qualified scientist to perform duties and to help pharmaceutical industry in drug development, manufacturing and marketing.
• will have the knowledge in practical aspects of delivering quality assured products as per pharmacopoeia, WHO and ISO standards.
• will have the skills and attitudes as pharmacist to inform and counsel patients regarding drug therapy.
• will be fully equipped with capabilities which are necessary for positive interactions with patients in community.
• will be a professional and life long active learner contributing their knowledge to develop the primary health care needs of the country.
• will have the knowledge, skills and positive attitudes in training future undergraduates in Pharmacy and contribute to the development of the field of Pharmacy.
